The first edition of the tournament took place in 1922 , and this was the only one organised directly by the Football Federation. The competition was revived in the 1926-1927 season (an edition interrupted in the round of 32), and was subsequently reorganised on an annual basis from the 1935-1936 season : during this dual period the tournament was managed by the Superior Divisions Directory . The event was interrupted again, due to the Second World War , in 1943, and resumed in 1958 under the aegis of the National Professional League until the 2009-2010 edition .
